Grace without Limits: Ministry for people with disabilities
Grace Without Limits is a ministry created to support people with disabilities so that they may participate meaningfully in parish life. Disabilities vary greatly, from short term to chronic, and visible and invisible. A tenet of our Catholic faith is that God’s grace is a gift that is joyfully given, regardless of physical abilities, communication skills, or cognitive understanding. Our work: The ministry team has created an accessible and inclusive Mass at Resurrection Parish. We offer this mass from September through May, the third Sunday of the month. We have modified this mass to be of shorter duration, have less music, and we have a large screen with the words to follow along. This is designed to be both sensory friendly, as well as more accessible for people with cognitive impairments, chronic pain, and other medical conditions. Additionally, we invite any interested individuals to serve as ushers, cross bearers, altar servers, choir members, and readers: we offer supports and accommodations, so that individuals who otherwise might hesitate to serve in one of these roles, instead feel warmly welcomed to serve. Our current project is to make room 7 into a sensory friendly space. This room is a quiet space with a livestream of each mass. As we add sensory supports, people and families with sensory challenges (such as ADHD or Autism) will find that they are getting more out of mass when their nervous systems are regulated. Our future goals are to offer accessible religious education and a caregiver support group.
Join us: Be a part of our ministry and share your ideas about how to support parishioners living with disabilities, both visible and invisible. We meet once a month the Wednesday two weeks before our Accessible Mass, at 4:30 pm in Room 7.
